The afforestation scheme is compatible with CAP and the Agri Environmental Schemes which allows farmers to maximise whole farm income. In addition to the annual Tax-Free forest premiums, Farmers can continue to:

  • Receive full BISS (Basic Income Support for Sustainability) on planted land including land planted under the Native Tree Area Scheme.
  • Receive CRISS (complementary Redistributive Support for Sustainability) on planted land.
  • Receive Organic Farm Scheme payments on land planted with Agro Forestry.
  • Receive full ACRES payments on their farm.
  • Receive the Woodland Environmental Fund additional payment of €1000 per hectare on land planted with Native Woodland.
  • Receive Tax-Free forest premiums of up to €1,142 per hectare per year for 20 years.
  • Receive Tax-Free forest premiums of up to €2,284 per hectare per year for 10 years.
  • Afforestation grants cover the full costs of planting meaning free forest establishment.
  • Landowner remains full owner of both the land and the trees.
  • Attractive grants for forest roads, tending and thinning.
  • Tax efficient regarding inheritance.
  • Tax-Free status of timber sales.
  • Amenity value in certain circumstances.
  • Agro forestry option enables farming and forestry to be carried out on the same piece of land.
